Ward Zwart

With 4 solo shows and 10 group shows all over Europe self-taught 23 year old Ward Zwart of Antwerp, Belgium tells us "[He] is young and so the best is still to come…" and we believe him. He draws every day and is inspired by "everyday life". He started out by doing pencil portraits of his friends and his style has been described as 'kinda' fucked up on purpose'. As well as publishing his own zines (our curator Jo Galvin came across Zwart by doing a zine swap via the internet), he has had his work published in numerous European magazines and underground press including Cafe Royal and Moloko Plus.

Interview with Vincent Lum and Charles Cumming

Leah Forsyth, Charles Cumming & Vincent Lum installing the work

How old are you?
Charles is 26 and Vincent is 27

Where are you from?
Charles is from South Africa and Vincent is from New Zealand,

How did you get in to what you do?
We're not really sure, we both did design and painting respectively at the same art school (unitec), we've never collaborated before in such a big way until recently when we formed a mini drawing school just for fun.

What is your favourite medium to work in?
Pens, ink and little bit of collage stuff

Who and or what inspires you?
Movies, books, national geographic, humor between friends.

What is your favorite thing to draw and why
Characters, animals, semi surreal ideas. Haven't really thought about why, we consider our work to be subliminal so we can't really say why, it just comes out.

How would you describe your aesthetic?
LO-FI! Low brow and all that kind of stuff, ahhhhhh playful? disposable? Illustrative? Visual word association.

Tell me about the last few exhibitions you were involved with
Charles: Past shows have been installations using soft sculpture based on illustrative characters.
Vincent: In the past I've worked doing large paintings ink, and book making, most recently I created a imaginary environment using suspended cardboard masses enamel paint and populated with knitted animals created with Hannah.

What is the best show you've ever done and why
Vincent: I worked on a wall with Mark Baraunias, it was straight on a wall in ink it was cool seeing my work fitting in and sitting alongside a more established artist who is from the Finer side of the art world.
Charles: In the translate show i built a whole bunch of big soft shapes that were made for people to move around and rearranged into new characters. I was worried people were not going to touch them but there was a lot of beer and people ended up throwing them around and jumping into them and it was good.

Did you study art? If so, when, where and what qualification did you come away with
We both studied at unitec, A Bachelor of Design, Charles majored in Design and Vincent majored in Painting.

Have you had your work published anywhere (including self made publications) when and where

we both had work in publication made by Charles and Chanel Bristow called Limited Edition that was back when were in school.

Tell me about the body of work you are submitting for Bro-Fi...
It's basically a product of the past 6 months, me n Charles started getting together every Wednesday and doing drawings together just for something to do. How we work is pretty casual, we had an "everything goes" ethic about it, so we take turns starting a drawing and the next person just reacting to what ever the other person has put on the paper, because of this the drawings end up quite strange looking, full of mismatching ideas and pretty surreal imagery. We also are toying with the idea, well, attempting in some of the drawings to walk the fine line of good and bad visual taste, such as trying to make a horrible drawing somehow work well, or doing bad drawings on purpose in order to understand how our personal taste works.

ONE MONTH STAND
PREVIEW 6th NOVEMBER 2008
viewing until 27th November

After two years of residing in Sydney, Erin Forsyth has returned to Auckland for one month to produce a series of new work for the Launch of Liberty Gallery..

In 2006 Erin Forsyth, (former proprietor of sneaker/aerosol concept store Creep) set off to Sydney, where she produced two successful solo exhibitions; Illness at Somedays Gallery in 2007, and Hex at Black and Blue Gallery in March of this year.

Her illustrations featured in Illness drew comparisons with the work of famed graffiti artist/illustrator and tattooist Mike Giant. Hex was featured in Australia’s Yen magazine and selected as ‘pick of the week’ by local publication The Brag in which Erin was also referred to as part of “the cream of the Sydney underground art scene”.

Solo projects aside, Erin readily contributed to community and group exhibitions most notably with the prestigious Monster Children Gallery and the 2008 Design is Kinky Exhibition, Kids Today hosted by MTV Gallery.

Various commissions followed which included an A2 poster for Australian publication Don’t Panic, illustrations for the cult classic Duke Magazine and aerosol work for paint brand Sabotaz.

In fitting with her productive nature One Month Stand is a completely new body of work, created over the last month, since her return to Auckland.

One Month Stand is Erin’s first solo exhibition in NZ since I can’t believe it’s not Rabbit in 2003. The exhibition delivers an in depth view into Erin’s love affair with the misguided and restless youth of the city.
